DNS Dumpster is a subdomain discovery and DNS reconnaissance tool that helps you map the attack surface of a domain. It uses multiple techniques to find related hosts and subdomains.
Discovery Methods
- Certificate Transparency Logs — Searches public CT logs (crt.sh) for SSL certificates issued to subdomains
- Common Subdomain Checks — Tests common subdomain names like www, mail, api, dev, staging
- DNS Resolution — Resolves discovered subdomains to find active hosts
- Reverse DNS — Looks up PTR records to find hostnames for IPs
- ASN Lookup — Identifies the hosting provider and network for each IP
Information Gathered
- A Records — IP addresses for each subdomain
- Reverse DNS — Hostname associated with each IP
- ASN — Autonomous System Number and organization name
- Country — Geographic location of the server
- MX Records — Mail servers for the domain
- NS Records — Authoritative name servers
- TXT Records — SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and other text records
